This comic originally started in March 2003 at the suggestion of my girlfriend at the time who thought I needed more original work to my name. All previous creative works I had were things like fan trailers for movies, and anime music videos. Originally I only posted comics on my Livejournal so the audience was rather limited, and it took a while before I was updating daily (not that most webcomics have a huge audience when they first go online). I designed the website myself but for the php programming of the main interface I use Walrus which lots of other webcomics use as a backbone. For the calendar archive I used the script generously shared by David Buist which uses the same php variables as Walrus making it easy to implement. My friend Mark also tweaked the Walrus code to allow it to use multiple image types and added the code so that the date on the top of the box updates according to the strip being displayed. In late 2005 I added myself to the Oh No Robot Comics Database which added a search function for my comic. The forum is from phpBB. The thing most important about my comic to me is that it keeps me creative if for only fifteen minutes a day. I treat is as a way to both keep an archive of things I find amusing and to hopefully entertain people at the same time. |

I was born in Boston, Massachusetts (well, not actually IN Boston, but if I mentioned my hometown most of you would just blink your eyes at which point I’d just say it’s near Boston anyway) and went to NYU majoring in film after one year majoring in photography. After a few months of unemployment I worked at this horrible place called Video Fashion which pays their entire staff under the table and also wasn't paying me on time which is why I quit. Fortunately not too long afterwards I reconnected with the movie trailer company I interned at Senior year, where I worked for three years. I now work at a DVD producing company. I don’t have a very artistic background, but I started in first grade drawing comics using crude renditions of the Japanese character Doreamon, and Hobbes from Calvin & Hobbes. After that I started drawing Quincy from Fox Trot and then kind of derived a character from that which I called Yoshi because I also drew Yoshi from Super Mario World. That character carried me through high school, but I stopped around college. One thing I took from that artistically is that Quincy's nose has become the head of the generic smiling character except the nostrils are now the eyes. I don’t have any collected comedy writing or screenplays. Though in my junior year of high school I wrote essays to vent about things I hated (like my honors English class, Hi Ms. Serafin!). I took that writing style and incorporated it more into school papers. Freshman year of college I had a great Writing Workshop teacher who suggested I should use my style of writing for a website or blog. I also took a class called "New York Humor" which gave me the opportunity to do some stand-up comedy because my professor knew someone at Stand-Up New York, and for each class had a night reserved for members of her class to perform. So myself and about a third of the class performed that one night. I went on to do perform two or three times after that. I still want to make short films, but I can't stand the huge production process with film and a crew. Instead I've been making short silent films with my video camera and available friends. This has been really great practice because it only takes a few hours on a weekend and it's a lot of fun. The stories are usually similar to my comic and highly inspired by old silent film comedies. My ultimate hope is to someday make a feature film which I'm guessing would be very personal, much like my comic. |
